Gym & Spa FAQs
How much equipment does a gym need?
This depends on user numbers, demographics and available space. Effective gyms balance equipment with open areas for stretching, functional training and classes. We design layouts based on peak usage modelling rather than simply filling space.
Do we need changing rooms and showers?
- Residential gyms – showers are essential where pools, sauna or steam are provided.
- Workplace gyms – showers are strongly recommended to remove barriers to use.
- Private home gyms – typically not required.
How should gym equipment be cleaned?
Use manufacturer-approved, non-abrasive cleaning products and avoid harsh chemicals. We provide cleaning guidance and maintenance schedules with every installation to protect equipment and finishes
How often should equipment be serviced?
Most facilities require quarterly planned maintenance, with lower-use sites serviced at least annually. High-traffic environments may need more frequent visits.
What is typical delivery lead time?
Lead times vary by manufacturer and specification, typically 4–10 weeks for new equipment and faster for refurbished solutions.
Does a gym need to be staffed?
Staffing depends on the facility:
- Pools must be supervised in line with regulations
- Dry gyms can operate unmanned with inductions, signage and monitoring
- Part-time staffing improves engagement and safety
How often do spa/sauna/steam areas need checking?
Wet-side facilities require daily checks and weekly servicing as a minimum, with full PPM schedules tailored to usage levels and HSG179 guidance.
What lighting is best for gyms?
Even, glare-free lighting that avoids clinical brightness and supports different activities. Adjustable lighting is recommended for studios and multi-use spaces.
Do acoustics matter?
Yes. Impact and airborne noise must be managed through flooring, ceilings and wall treatments, particularly in residential and workplace buildings.
Do we need a water station?
Yes, a mains-fed water dispenser is recommended to support user comfort and hygiene.
Where should equipment be stored?
Dedicated racks and cupboards are essential to keep floors clear and safe while protecting equipment.
What power and data are required?
Cardio equipment requires dedicated power; connected consoles need data provision. Requirements vary by manufacturer and are confirmed at design stage.
What is the minimum ceiling height?
- 6m for treadmills and cross trainers
- 4m for weights, stretching and classes
- Final heights depend on equipment selection and user comfort.
What AV solutions work best?
High-quality audio and screens encourage usage and enhance classes. Solutions should be commercial grade and integrated with your building systems.
What flooring should we choose?
Flooring is zoned to activity type for grip, durability and acoustics. It must be easy to clean and suitable for the spaces above and below.
