Ever wondered what it’s like to manage the logistics and installations of gym equipment worth millions? We interviewed Rolstone Langmead, the Logistics and Gym Install Manager at motive8, to provide us with an insider’s perspective on his journey, responsibilities, and the challenges he faces daily.
A Decade of Dedication
I have been with motive8 for over 10 years. My journey within the company has been diverse, starting as a gym and spa operative and gradually climbing the ladder to my current role.
As Logistics and Gym Installations Manager my responsibilities include overseeing the delivery and installation of £2.5M worth or product sales nationally and the monitoring and maintaining of all stock working whilst working closely with our gym equipment suppliers.
Evolution of Responsibilities
During my employment at motive8, my role has undergone significant changes over the years. I initially worked as a gym and spa operative at one of our managed sites progressing to a Site Manager, a promotion then led to Area Manager. I then transferred to the Gym Design department as my responsibilities transitioned into a gym installation role, and eventually become the Logistics and Gym Install Manager. The scope of my role expanded further when I took on the responsibility of managing the warehouse as the company expanded 3 years ago.
A Glimpse into Daily Operations
Whether on-site for an installation or in the office/warehouse, my day is a blend of meticulous planning and problem-solving.
Onsite installation day:
- Wake up at 05:30.
- Arrival at the installation site by 07:30.
- In-depth site inductions, health & safety inspections, and equipment relocation.
- Equipment assembly, testing, and commissioning until 15:00.
- Client handover, paperwork with follow-up actions, and drive home by 18:00.
Office/Warehouse Day:
- Up at 06:00 for a 5k run twice a week.
- Arrival at the office/warehouse by 08:00.
- Daily schedule review, team and engineer coordination, and addressing overnight updates from suppliers.
- Meetings, calls, and administrative tasks from 11:00 to 13:00.
- Lunch break with a weekly golf range visit.
- Afternoon dedicated to handling deliveries, equipment picking, project scheduling, issuing RAMS for upcoming projects and O&M manuals.
Essential Skills for Success
My role requires me to be very organised and to plan ahead. I’m also able to adapt quickly when dealing with various suppliers and contractors. Flexibility and foresight are crucial in his role.
Industry Trends and Innovations
I’ve recently witnessed the increasing popularity of dedicated areas for circuit-style workouts and HIIT equipment in gyms. This shift has led to a surge in the sale of equipment like sleds, ski ergs, and assault bikes.
Exciting Projects on the Horizon
I am particularly excited about an upcoming project involving the installation of the new Technogym Universe Cage. It’s always exciting to explore and see new products, and learn about their installation requirements for future projects.
motive8’s Unique Appeal
What I enjoy most about working at motive8 is witnessing the company’s growth while maintaining its core values. Empowered by the directors, I have been given the opportunity to manage and oversee a vital part of the business in my own style with their full support. This strong backing not only propels the continuous progression of the company but also fosters an environment where staff empowerment remains a driving force.
