Richard is a Director and a co-owner of motive8 since 2016. Over this period, he has held many roles but his core expertise and main role is heading up the maintenance division.
As part of our team spotlight series, we sat down with Richard to find how the maintenance division has grown, his passion for developing the team, delivering maintenance solutions and his proudest achievements at motive8.
Delivering maintenance solutions
The core to solving complex challenges for our clients is to really understand the problem from our clients point of view. Sometimes what we might not see as a problem, is a problem for our client. Once you can see it from their side, we are able to provide solutions that suit a specific issue that the client is experiencing. Another client might have the same problem, but different people and issues require different solutions.
It’s important that we are creative with the solutions we provide. Ultimately you have to really think outside the box. Solutions generally have to be cost effective, practical and manageable moving forwards. We don’t like to make a quick fix; the solution needs to be a long-term solution.
360% degree approach
If asked what I’d like someone to know about motive8, I would want them to know that we have been trading for a long time and it’s testament to the service we provide. Ultimately, we offer the complete package from solution to install, from our own equipment brand, gym inductions, personal training all the way through to maintenance and servicing. It’s all in-house, we offer 360° solutions. We always strive to support our clients and nurture them throughout the process from start to finish.
Importance of equipment layout and gym design
motive8 considers every single detail of each project, from equipment layout to gym design. Our experienced teams follow emerging trends, works with top industry suppliers and embrace new ways of thinking, to ensure the end result smartly satisfies every equipment need and gym design requirement.
Making space for functional training areas
With the rise of online fitness content over the past 10 years we have witnessed a greater demand for functional training spaces, especially within the commercial sector. These specialist workout areas can attract new members, improve membership retention and help keep ahead of the competition.
Sustainability is the next big focus
For the maintenance department, sustainability is probably the next big focus for us. We have a workshop for our skilled engineers who repair and refurbish used equipment, that would otherwise be sent to landfill. For obvious reasons this is a hot topic and we want to do what we can do to be as sustainable as possible. We don’t want to step on new sales but ultimately there’s a market for those who are looking for a more affordable option, and this allows us to capture another market while also reducing waste.
Comradery at work
The thing that excites me most about working at motive8 and the leisure industry is two-fold. Internally, I enjoy the people I work with. I like being around the team, the comradery and watching them grow. Externally, it’s fulfilling to provide a service to our clients that makes them happy. I’m in a fortunate position that the decisions I make have an impact.
Supporting improvement
When it comes to my core expertise, I like to support the team in reaching their goals and be the best they can be – not just at work, but help them to follow their passions and reach their aspirations outside of work too.
Proudest achievement to date
Last year we gained over 250 maintenance contracts. When you start from one and get to 250 plus it feels like a big achievement.
